Crossing Mackinac Bridge

We sense the change going north
fresher air perhaps
more birches
the towns not so threatening
dwindling into friendliness
to tempt the anonymity of the expressway
but we don't stop.

We see the bridge
forced up through trees
an island beckoning in a green sea
long before we hear it
whispering beneath our tires
as it lifts us over water
so blue it hurts our eyes.

We feel uplifted
in the span of peninsulas
dipping into new experiences
over ships and shorelines
flashing underneath us
as we descend
toward our journey's end.
