Upon Observing Virgin and Child on the Crescent Moon (c.1480) at the DIA

You hold this child up as if
he will keep the forces
of Andromeda ....
and he reaches out--
pulling strings that hold stars,
facing east

waiting for them
to swing toward one another

but dark matter suspends them.

And your crown rests upon your head,
as if you have a need to carry the world.

I hear
Nacht Unde Traume :

Heil'ge Nacht, du sinkest nieder;
Nieder wallen auch die Träume
Wie dein licht durch die Räume,

and that moment of pure silence comes,
a waiting--
an expectation
of your half closed eyes to look up at me.
